Let’s Move On

Over the last week it has been interesting to witness the glee across the country as Alabama has “fallen” so far. Lord, this whole Alabama’s dynasty thing is just silly. I read where some “Alabama fan” was calling for Saban to resign and Kirby Smart to take over. Please. In 1969 they were calling for Bear to step down then he reinvented the team with the wishbone and the rest is history.

Honestly, what has happened, in my humble opinion, is that offenses in football have changed so quickly that it has simply been hard for Saban to adapt. He cut his teeth in the NFL where there are basically three offenses and they’re all pretty much alike. Now he’s trying to create a defense that can counter these crazy offenses. Part of the problem is that the offenses tend to cheat. They often have linemen five yards beyond the line of scrimmage and players making their reads are reading run. So they come up and stuff happens like Ole Miss’s last long touchdown. That should have been flagged for ineligible down field. But that almost never happens. The NCAA talked about a rule change but tabled it. (Now they are allowed to be three yards from the line of scrimmage—the new rule would make it one.) The thing is people like offense and find defensive games dull and boring so chances are there will be no rule change and life will go on and the Tide simply has to adapt.

Saban is adapting. It’s not like they’ve died since the Notre Dame game. They played in the Sugar Bowl and went to the playoff last year. They just lost those games. The issue is the defensive backs. Saban’s defensive schemes are so complicated—they depend on players making reads based on what the offense is doing. By the end of the year when the freshmen defensive backs “get it” everything will fall into place. The good news is once again they can play offense with anybody. They can score points. It’s not as bad as it seems.

I almost picked Ole Miss to win. I really knew they were going to give the Tide fits and I was concerned, rightly as it turns out, about the quarterback play. This is another experience thing. Coker has the tools just not the experience. We’ll see but I think the Tide be OK down the line.

As far as UL Monroe goes for the Tide to get back on track they need to take this game seriously and not sleepwalk through three quarters. The defense needs to come to play and the offense needs to play mistake-free football. In the old days the Tide would take out their frustrations on the War Hawks. Here’s to the old days!

My guess Alabama 45 ULM 10.
