The End is Near

It has almost been painful to watch basketball season at the University of Alabama this year. Anthony Grant has tried and nothing has worked. His team, which at one point had a shot at a 500 record in the SEC, is now just playing out the string. They haven’t quit but it doesn’t matter.

Kristy Curry has also failed to do much with her charges. The situation at Alabama is very similar to the situation in Kentucky only in reverse. Does anybody really care about Alabama basketball? It hasn’t gotten absolutely embarrassing but it’s getting close. This has to be Grant’s last season. The question is will Alabama go after a known coach from an established program or will they pluck somebody out of a strong mid-major program and hope for the best. I’m betting on the latter.

Who in their right mind would want to leave an established program and come to Alabama? True the money and the facilities would be good – but no matter what, you are always going to be playing second fiddle. In Tuscaloosa, as Paul Bryant one said, basketball is the thing that comes between football and spring football. For many of the Tide faithful that’s just what it is and unless something changes that’s what it will remain.

Alabama has had some decent teams over the years and many have advanced in the NCAA tournament. Though, it has been a while since that’s happened. As long as the football team keeps up its winning ways most fans will ignore basketball until the football season is over. That is just the way it is.

What can Bill Battle do? This is going to be a big hire for him. If a coach could come in to Tuscaloosa and get the best players from the state they could make some noise. Those players tend to go to Kentucky and elsewhere. The second tier guys end up staying. Any coach that can reverse that trend could create enough magic in T-town to make basketball relevant. Sadly, that’s something I’ll believe when I see it.
