That Empty Feeling

I don’t know about you but I was pretty much expecting the Tide to be playing this evening. I was especially sure when we drew OSU rather than Oregon. Well, we all know how that turned out. Go Ducks!

It was a great season. It certainly didn’t end as well as we had hoped, but hey stuff happens. The way this season ended was way better than the way last season ended. The two games Alabama lost this year were games they were in until the last play. Both ended in interceptions. Both were heart breaking, but neither was like the end of last year. You didn’t get that soul crushing loss and that trending downward feeling. Plus one loss does not a losing streak make.

This team was fun to watch. It was not the machines that we have seen in the past that crushed everything that got in their way. It was an anomaly of a Nick Saban Alabama football team. This team either blew the other team out of the water from the get go – or it kept you on the edge of your seat for 60 minutes. You always thought they’d pull it out in the end, and somehow most of the time, they did.

Over the years my favorite Alabama football player was always Joe Namath. The dude was, and is, just so darn cool. Now I’ll have to add Blake Sims as my number 2 guy. Blake is so cool because he was the everyman of Alabama football. He didn’t have the tools. He was the consummate team guy. He never took credit when they won and always took the blame when they lost and you just know he’s a nice guy.

When you watch OSU play Oregon tonight, think about Blake Sims. I’m sure he’s a little sad tonight because he’s not there, just like we are, but think of the joy that he gave us all year. Think of everything he overcame to get there – to be the starting quarterback at the University of Alabama. He made us all proud, because he did his best every single time, and you just can’t ask for more than that.
