The Playoff

It’s here – the playoff who’s in? Well, we finally answered that question and so we can move on to the games: Oregon vs Florida State in the Rose Bowl and Alabama vs Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. The run up to these big games is always interesting. There was lots of hype and plenty of articles and video segments to keep one interested.

If you’ve paid attention, I will admit I have not paid much attention to the Rose Bowl. I honestly think the magic that has gotten Florida State this far will continue for one more night. I don’t know how and I won’t even try to predict it, I just think it will happen. It shouldn’t, I think Oregon is the batter team, but that hasn’t mattered all season. Either Florida State is so good they just don’t have to give a hoot until the end of the game or they are luckier than the 2013 Auburn team, a team they beat.

The Sugar Bowl is the game that I have been paying more attention to. In the print media there were any number of stories. It seems that Urban Myer has created an SEC team at The Ohio State University. They have a fast front seven and speed everywhere that they are going to need/want speed. I guess their Achilles heel is a lack of depth.

They seem to be quite confident. Joey Bosa OSU’s All-American defensive end said: “I definitely don’t think they’ve seen a defensive line like us. We’ve watched them (on tape). Ole Miss did a good job, so we’ve been watching that game a lot. Consistently throughout the season, they haven’t seen a D-line like this, and I mean, we haven’t really seen a line like them yet this year. It will be a good battle.” I guess he’s saying they are better than any SEC line, which is quite a statement, though he did temper that by giving the Tide O-line a little love.

ESPN has made note that the OSU guys are laid back and not uptight about the upcoming contest. Though, to be honest neither team seemed tight. In the interviews I saw they both seemed to be having fun, like they had been there and done that. ESPN seemed to make a lot of that. Who the heck knows.

They must be better than most Big 10 teams. They beat every one of them that they played. They lost one game. We lost one game. Everything else is pretty much the same – except they went through the Big 10 and we went through the SEC.

Now I say that with a little trepidation. There was some wacky mojo going on in the SEC this year. I think it has to do with senior classes more than anything else but I think that’s fair. LSU has been the most inconsistent team in the conference. Yet, ESPN continues to go on and on about them. They looked out of sync and again showed an inability to throw the ball against Notre Dame. Yet, they took Alabama to overtime. The game was in Baton Rouge and that made a big difference and plus they might have played their best game that night.

Then we had the Mississippi teams basically come out of nowhere and threaten to turn the world upside down. Both had a bunch of seniors and both played way better than they did last year. Both Mississippi State and Ole Miss had good line play as I recall. LSU did as well, but they just looked lost against Notre Dame. All of that said unless Ohio State can force Alabama into passing situations – third and long I just don’t see them doing what Oklahoma did last year. Also I think the Tide is up for this game, which they were not last year.

I think this game will be close for a while. I would not be surprised if OSU scored first. They are going to sky high and Alabama will have to weather whatever they throw at them in the opening. I think Alabama can disrupt their passing game. The current OSU quarterback is not nearly as mobile as others the Tide has faced. If Alabama can shut down OSU’s run game and force them into passing situations everything should be fine. If not it will be a pretty stressful evening for Alabama fans. My best guess here is Alabama 27 OSU 17.
