Homecoming 2014

I reckon Gene Stallings said it best when he said if you don’t think these games are important try loosing one. That seems unlikely with Western Carolina coming to town but stuff happens – ask Florida.

Homecoming means parades, bonfires, pep rallies and football. In Tuscaloosa Terry Saban helps with the TV broadcast of the homecoming parade. The coach supposes she does a good job – he, needless to say, hasn’t seen it. He has other duties.

Saban seems happy going into this game. He’s not ranting about respecting the opponent and he’s not on a tear generally. He has said that this has been a great team to coach. It’s an odd team. It hasn’t been dominant, but it has won most its games. There have been offensive lulls in games – but when push comes to shove they seem to get the job done.

The lulls have come under scrutiny – it’s the time of year when team are being bisected, dissected and generally over analyzed. Everybody’s looking for flaws and everybody’s finding them. This is a flawed team. It’s made up of a bunch of seniors who might not be the best player to ever play for Saban in the star rating category.

Those guys are the ones who are getting the job done. Blake Sims, DeAndrew White, Brian Vogeler have all contributed to this season. If he wasn’t playing for Alabama Sims would be the feel good story of the year. Because he is he’s just part of the Saban machine.

He’s the guy who was written off as dead after the A-Day game. He was not good in that game. He missed receivers, threw interceptions and left everybody with the impression that Jake Cocker would ride into T-town and save the day. It didn’t happen. That’s a testament to Blake Sims as a person and as a player.

There is a lot of football to be played. No matter what happens today or next week there will be a bowl game. There could be two playoff games. That’s in the future. Today Blake Sims and the rest of the seniors have an opportunity to make the alumni and all of the other people who ventured into Bryant-Denny Stadium to see this game very happy. Play well guys!
