The First Game of November
This is the second season. This is the beginning of the most difficult and most important four game stretch of Alabama’s season. It all starts tonight in Baton Rouge. Win all of these games and the Tide goes to Atlanta and maybe further.
Since 2007 Alabama vs. LSU has become an annual big game. Before the arrival of Nick Saban, November was a bad month for the Tide. I remember Alabama went several years when they didn’t win an SEC game in November. Before the bad times Alabama had a multiple game winning streak in Baton Rouge. The streak as it was known was ended by Nick Saban. There’s lots of shared history in this game.
For the Tide to get to where they want to be they must win in Baton Rouge tonight. It’s a strength vs strength game. LSU has abandoned the passing game and have become a run heavy team that uses the run to set up safe play action passes. Alabama is the best team in the SEC against the run. They are especially good against running backs – mobile quarterbacks give them problems. LSU has a stable of running backs that will test the Tide’s front seven.
The game’s at night. The home crowd will be lubricated and loud. Blake Sims and the Tide offense had issues in Oxford with crowd noise. Those issues continued in Fayetteville, though they seem to have been solved in Knoxville. The question remains how will the Tide play in what will be a very hostile environment.
If they are to run the table it must start tonight. Look for a hard fought low scoring game. Lots of defense and the game will turn on a big play or two. Blake Sims and the Alabama defensive line will be the key. Sims presents a problem that Alabama has heretofore not brought into Death Valley. Alabama will pull away late. My guess Alabama 24 LSU 17.
