Halloween

It’s Halloween and up here they’re predicting snow. Yeah, is that nuts or what. It’s kind of scary snow in October, well it’s Halloween. And speaking of scary, for everybody who melted down when the Tide didn’t make the top four in the initial ESPN College Football Playoff® poll just chill. The Tide’s in the top ten and things will change in the next four weeks.

This weekend is a good example of how things will change. Auburn is at Ole Miss and as a result one of those teams will have two losses. It’s one of those games where I don’t know who to pull for. I seriously want Auburn to lose but Ole Miss needs to lose another game. I mean it’s actually a win-win no matter who loses.

That game will help sort some things out. Either Ole Miss will fall out of the top four or they will enhance their position. If they fall out, Auburn will probably take their place and the Tide will move up a notch or not. The Tide basically controls its own destiny. You know this, if Alabama wins out it’s likely they’ll go to Atlanta, unless Ole Miss wins out as well. In which case, they’ll go to Atlanta and Alabama will most likely be the second highest ranked one loss team. Will that put them into the ESPN College Football Playoff®? Who knows.

The notion of having these top twenty-fives by the ESPN College Football Playoff® committee is just plain silly. The basketball people don’t do that and I thought that the glory that is March Madness was what this whole exercise was based upon. I mean it’s not based on the NFL model which is conference winners and wildcards, no that would take all of the subjectivity out of it. So instead you have thirteen people, except right now you have twelve who will pick the most deserving teams.

Meanwhile, a bunch old white guys are going to continue to say that Condi Rice isn’t qualified to choose teams, except she’s on the committee. Maybe that’s sour grapes or maybe it’s something else. Hey, this is way better than the BCS or the old poll system. It’s football by committee.

Now I know something about stuff being done by committee. I was a minor league bureaucrat for a while and let me tell you anything done by committee is just a convoluted mess. Everybody has their own agenda or they have their own pet projects – in this case teams or conferences. I know they are not supposed to but I think the committee is composed of humans, and let’s face it they got stuff going on, all humans do.

But that’s not the point I mean Who’s in?It’s like an endless political ad. NOBODY’S IN and NOBODY gonna be in until December. Everybody’s got their top four – so I could have one as well and it would be as useful as everybody else’s. Oh well, I’ve digressed enough. Forgive me. The ESPN College Football Playoff® is a wonderful thing and like Windows® and cell phones it will make my life soooooo much better and the best thing is the college football champion will be decided on the field. No more computers or polls or any of that silly whatnot. Right?
