Fourth Saturday in October

Alabama played well last week and is poised to make the first college football playoff. All they have to do is take care of business for the rest of the season. If they go to Knoxville and lay an egg all bets are off.

To say the Tide has not done well on the road is being kind. They lost a game in Oxford to a red hot Ole Miss team and nearly blew one to a dismal Arkansas squad. Tennessee has nothing to lose and a reputation to be made – if – they can pull off an upset Saturday night. While their offense is dismal, their defense is pretty solid. If Alabama plays on the road the way they did the last two times the season could come crashing down.

On the other hand if the two road games were simply a mid-season slump, which was corrected last weekend, the Tide should be fine. There is no vibe for this game and that’s troubling. The loose play and excited players that swarmed the sidelines in Tuscaloosa – are those players the new Crimson Tide? Let’s hope so because those players upped their game and made a statement.

It’s interesting what a difference one game makes. A week ago the funeral procession for Alabama’s 2014 season was being planned. Then 59 points later the Tide became the favorite to win the national championship. Heady stuff, so what gives?

The Tide can take the Vols on paper and I believe on the field. Tennessee will put up a fight. They need this game; they want this game. Winning it would change the perception of the team and remake their season. Alabama cannot lose this game and make all their dreams come true. That’s bad news for Tennessee. May guess Alabama 35 Tennessee 10.
