Phase II

The preliminaries are over and now the second phase of the season begins. The Tide has won all three games of this early season in less than spectacular fashion. If the whole thing seemed like a dress rehearsal, that’s because to some degree that’s exactly what we’ve been watching.

For all of you who are panicking over the lack of prowess on defense stand down. It’s hard to get your A game going when you are shuffling players in and out and trying to find the best combination. The starting unit hasn’t played a whole game and except for the West Virginia game it hasn’t really been tested. Yes, Southern Mississippi scored 12 points, so? Other than style points, who cares USM never threatened to take control of anything.

The speed on the defensive line is vastly improved. To date we’ve not seen any fancy blitzes and why should we? Why show off your schemes when there’s no reason to do it. There’s still some concern in the secondary, but that’ll get better as the season progresses and honestly, this team can score on anybody.

On offense this has been as vanilla as watching the A-Day game. FAU was the all screen pass game. USM was the let’s establish our running game affair. There have been a couple of shots down the field, but nothing I’ve seen, with the exception of some of the formations is any different than what we saw last year. Do we honestly think that’s all there is to Kiffin’s offense? I mean they haven’t even gotten the tight end involved. At this point the offense has been throw it to Cooper and let Yeldon and Henry pound on them. Not bad but nothing new.

Florida comes in and the Tide opens SEC play at home against a team that was lucky to beat Kentucky. That doesn’t lessen the impact of the Florida game. This will give the Tide’s offense and defense the opportunity to operate against players that will test them.

The Tide needs to be tested. I think the best will come from this team when it is pressed. West Virginia did that and in the second half the defense came alive and shut down the passing game by pressuring the quarterback. Florida should test the Tide in all phases of the game and that’s a good thing. The team needs a good punch in the mouth. I think it is perfectly capable of punching back.
