A Tale of Two Quarterbacks

Two games into the season and we have now seen both perspective Alabama quarterbacks play. Both have played well though it does seem quite clear that one has a better grasp of the offense than the other.

The internet is a wonderful thing and you can learn a lot of interesting information from it. I read this morning that some voter in one of the poles dropped Alabama because they didn’t beat Florida Atlantic as badly as Nebraska did and because Alabama has not settled on a quarterback.

That’s pretty interesting. I reckon that guy’s got a check list. He compares scores and checks out the starting lineup or lack thereof. I reckon that’s as good a system as any. I also saw where one writer has determined that Blake Sims is the guy. He had it all lined out with really good reasoning and everything.

It seems to me that Nick Saban will decide, when he’s ready, exactly who is the guy. He could play both quarterbacks throughout the season. He did that at LSU. In the end, make no mistake about it, Saban will determine who is the guy – or guy 1 and 1a.

For what it’s worth my take on it is this. Sims has a much better grasp of the offense than Coker. That was abundantly clear last Saturday. He has more playing experience than Coker and he’s been in Saban’s process for four years. He’s a team guy and the players to like him. Plus he has become a much better player than the guy we saw in the A-Day game.

Jake Coker on the other had seems a better fit for Saban’s model. He has a strong arm, he, no doubt, can make all the throws, but he's missing the experience and he has not reached a good comfort level with the offense. Taking a sack and blowing a field goal caused Saban and Kiffin to throw hissy fits, as well it should have. Shoot, Coker should have known better than that in high school. In his defense, he was probably trying to make a play.

All summer the experts said this is Coker’s team. He’s the guy he’ll come down to Tuscaloosa and take the reins. Much of the rush to hand him the keys was based on the A-Day game in which Sims looked awful. Again Saban said after that game that it was no indication of how Sims had progressed during the spring.

If all things were equal the ball would probably be handed to Coker and Sims would take his place as the backup. All things are not, at least right now. Sims is simply way ahead of Coker in terms of knowing what to do. That’s important. Yes, Coker has a better upside than Sims, which is why they both may play over the course of the year. But right now, today, Sims gives the Tide the best opportunity to win. That may change after the Southern Mississippi game. We’ll see. Until then just wait and see how it plays out.
