Game One

It wasn’t real pretty but it was a win. It was the first game with a new quarterback and a cobbled together defense. 33-23 was closer than the experts predicted but a win is a win no matter how ugly.

Honestly, there’s no reason to panic, though I must admit I was thinking at times that maybe next year would be a better year. In the end the Tide did what it needed to do to secure the win. Next week we will likely see both quarterbacks in action and a defense with all of its players.

Alabama held West Virginia under 400 yards, just barely, but nonetheless. I expect some of the younger cornerbacks will get some playing time in the next couple of weeks. Surely the defensive backs can’t be as bad as they looked at times against the West Virginia wide outs. If they are the Texas A&M game could be a very, very long game.

The good news is Saban doesn’t have to try and repair the damage after a loss. The two game losing streak is over. Alabama is 1-0 against a team that put up a fight. That’s a good thing. These early season tests are important and will help the team grow.

Alabama 2014 is a work in progress. It will be interesting to watch it grow. Fixing little things like kickoff coverage should be fairly easy. The kicking game seemed solid and quarterback play did as well. Bama should have little problem with Florida Atlantic, though that’s what was said about West Virginia. The pieces are all there it’s just a matter of getting them all in the right place.
