Blake Sims will start

Saturday afternoon when Alabama’s offense handles the ball for the first time look for number six to trot out onto the field. His first play will probably be a short pass. After all of the hype of the off-season it has come down to experience.

Nick Saban is both conservative and loyal. He will reward Sims with the starting nod because he has been a selfless player during his time at Alabama and has done whatever has been asked of him. He also has a better command of the Alabama offense, at this point in the season.

I’ve seen at least one writer note that this is Sims one shot. By that he meant that if he plays poorly, throws interceptions or makes poor decisions Saban will turn to Jacob Coker. Frankly, I think he’s right.

This is Sims’s job to lose. He played very poorly in the A-Day game, though by all reports he had an outstanding spring. The reports indicate he has had an outstanding fall camp. He doesn’t have the physical tools that Coker has. He's shorter and reportedly Coker has a better arm.

What Coker lacks is experience. That’s the actual issue here. Saban is rightly nervous about turning over the team to a guy with four months in the system. A system that is right complicated and a process that the head coach swears by. It really isn’t that much of a conundrum.

Over the years this writer has marveled at those teams that start true freshmen quarterbacks and they light up the world and make Sports Center every week. That never seems to happen at Alabama. I have often wondered why? The SEC, the built in conservatism of the University, I have never figured it out.

Both guys will play in the West Virginia game and in fact I think the audition will continue until the Florida game . . . unless someone seizes the starting role. This is like 2011 but with no clear cut favorite, well there’s a fan favorite, but ultimately Saban not the fans or the media will makes the call.
