UT Volunteers

How low has Tennessee sunk? Consider this they have now had four loosing seasons in a row. Vanderbilt has more wins in the last 20 games than the Vols have had in their last 36. They are on their fourth coach since 2008. I could go on but I think I’ve made my point.

Second year Tennessee head coach Butch Jones has been rebuilding the program the right way. He has recruited talent and laid a foundation that should begin to payoff this season. Jones has not relied on juco transfers he has brought in high caliber high school players.

Tennessee is a young team and it will remain so this season. Jones predicted that he will line up some freshmen this year on both sides of the ball. They’ll make mistakes, but they’ll learn from those and the team will steadily improve.

UT should have improved quarterback play and should improve on last year’s 6.08 yards per play average. They have a good set of wide receivers and a freshman running back, Jalen Hurd, who should upgrade the running attack.

Many of the starters on last year’s defensive line, which gave up 207 rushing yards per game, are gone. The Vols will have to rely on defensive ends DeWayne Hendrix, Jordan Williams and Corey Vereen to supply a pass rush. While Danny O’Brien and Owen Williams along with a bevy of young and inexperienced players behind then will fill in the middle. The maturation of the young players will determine the success of the defense.

For the Vols the good news is they have Alabama at home. The bad news is they still are at a level where beating Alabama would be a major upset. With the right breaks the Vols could have four wins when the Tide rolls into Knoxville. They should win enough games this year to make a bowl. Unless, something miraculous happens in Neyland Stadium, Alabama will not be add to the Vols win column.
