Texas A&M – Aggies

There’s a Robert Earl Keene song where he tells a story about him and Lyle Lovett living in College Station. At the end of the story he says “We were Aggies.” If you know anything about Texas A&M that pretty much says it all.

Well you actually only need to know a couple of things about A&M this year. First of all they return six starters from last year’s offense. The other thing you need to know is that one of those starters was Johnny Manziel. That’s about it. Oh yeah, Mike Evans, Johnny’s faithful side kick/wide receiver is also gone, though that info is not nearly as critical.

By himself, well with help from receivers, Manziel generated 4,873 yards of total offense. He threw for 4,114 yards which included 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. If that’s not enough he was also the team’s leading rusher with 759 yards. The A&M offense scored more than 40 points in every game but two. Everybody that thinks they could have done that without Johnny Football raise your hand. That’s what I thought.

Texas A&M’s defense was f’ing abysmal last year. If it had just been mediocre they might have won the SEC, but they were gawd awful. The good news is that many of the players who were bad now have a year under their belts. I’m not sure if that will turn them into the 1986 Bears or even the 1992 Crimson Tide, but at least they might be the 2012 Vanderbilt Commodores. The long and short of it is, they should be better on that side of the ball.

The glass, I fear, is still only half full. They are going to come crashing back down to reality on offense. There’s magic and then there was Johnny Football. I watched him do things to the Tide the last couple of years that just plain blew my poor little mind. I sat there and I watched it. I knew it was real because I was watching it but I was like WTF. Well, he’s in Cleveland. I don’t care who they put under center, they never drew up half the stuff Johnny did and the poor unfortunate who lands the job, for better or for worse, will be judged against Johnny Manziel and he simply won’t measure up.

They play the Tide in Tuscaloosa. Alabama was embarrassed the last two years. End of story.
