Should he stay or should he go now?

From what I have heard there’s a serious movement amongst the natives to gather the pitchforks and torches and chase Anthony Grant out of town. I have heard of, though I admit I have not seen, various banners hanging from various frat houses and apartments in T-town – none of which are singing the head coach’s praises.

C.M. Newton thinks he should get more time. I will have to admit that C.M. knows way more about basketball than I do. I reckon there are questions that have to be asked and the program should be assessed before they back the moving van outside Grant’s house.

How did we get here? Trevor Lacy left. What was up with that? Did he and Grant simply not get along? Was his ego bruised? Did Grant feel he was a distraction? I don’t know. Those questions have not been answered. Though again C.M. Newton says everybody pretty much dropped the ball on that action.

Has the team improved? A month ago I would have said no. But right now I think I would say yes. There are now viable options other than Trevor Releford. Levi Randolph has stepped up his game, which means that Releford has some much needed help. We have not seen a lot of trouble, of the arrest report variety, which is frankly a good thing. No this team will not make the NCAA tournament, but then a whole lot of SEC teams will not make the tournament.

I think I’ll have to put myself in C.M. Newton’s camp and say give the guy another year. This will be his first losing season. No he has not taken the team consistently to the NCAA tournament then again the same can be said for a whole bunch of SEC teams. The problem is league wide. Another problem at Alabama is perception. This has been a down year for the Tide – Saban’s team came up short and then got slapped in the Sugar Bowl. Grant’s teams played well early in close losses to good teams – then there was a stretch where they got blown out. The loss to Auburn was bad as was the one to South Carolina. Then again Kentucky lost to South Carolina.

Let Grant have another year. Let’s see where he is then. I am not saying he needs to win the SEC. It would be nice to get into the NCAA tournament, but that in and of itself should not be the yardstick. If at the end of the next year – the basketball program is where it is right now. Headed nowhere perhaps it’s time to think about a new direction. Until then let’s cut the guy some slack.

  Roll Tide!
