March 01, 2010Basketball FinalUnless something remarkable happens Alabama basketball will be done by mid-March. Anthony Grant’s first team just hasn’t really set the world on fire and I honestly don’t expect them to get past the first game in the tournament. That’s OK. I figure they are pretty much trying to figure out how to play by the new rules. Some guys have probably bought in and some just haven’t. You’ll remember Coach Nick had the same problem his first year. This whole getting a lead and melting down thing is just too eerily familiar. But, judging Anthony Grant right now is just a waste of time. If there’s not some improvement next year then it’s time to reflect, but still not time for action. There is absolutely no reason not to believe that Grant will get the job done. He tutored with one of the SEC’s best. At this point in time he’s playing the hand he was dealt. Basketball, unlike football, can be changed with a couple of players. Look at what Kentucky has done. They bought in a couple of ringers and wham, bam, thank you ma’am. I’m not saying that the Tide will be challenging for the national title next year, but they could give the SEC west a serious run. I mean it’s not like anybody is running away with the title. For that matter the whole of the SEC, save a couple of teams scares no one. But that’s fodder for next year. Right now I guess we’ll just have to see. There are at least three more games to play this year and who knows they could get on a roll and win the SEC tourney and head off the NCAAs. Hey don’t laugh it could happen. Roll Tide Fox
