February 16, 2010Expectations and RealityThe Crimson tide softball team started the season with lofty ranking and high expectations. All of that came crashing down last weekend as the Missouri Tigers came to town and demonstrated how much those departed seniors meant to the team. Its way too early to push the panic button, but unfortunately it was probably a serious reality check. If they don’t spank USA they could be in for a world of hurt. I expect Coach Murphy will move people around and try to find some answers. I suspect by the end of March the team will be much better, college isn’t high school and he is playing some awfully young people. It will be OK. This is one of those times when you have to think about those kind of expectations. The football team will be facing those next year as well. The shelves are stocked everybody says. Well, maybe, but will the same chemistry be there that was in place the last couple of years? That’s the problem with the softball team. A bunch of All Americans are gone and a bunch of highly recruited freshmen and sophomores and being plugged in it will be a tough few weeks until they settle in. The real good news is Missouri was a pretty darn good team. At least they did not start out with a lightweight and get their clock cleaned. They were just out of sync and the leadership that had been there is gone. That will have to develop. These girls are good and they will find a way. Roll Tide Fox
